Petition – Aviation Advertising

We call upon the Government to legislate that, what is detailed in advertisements in our newspapers and on our airwaves, gives a true account of what flying does to the planet, so that the consumer can make an informed decision about whether or not to fly.

Like cigarette packaging and food allergen contents, aviation has a responsibility towards the health of the planet (and us) to declare full emissions. We therefore call upon the Government to legislate that aviation is required to declare, clearly, in adverts and competitions, the emissions that will be released by flying. For example, if the advert promotes flying to Spain it should detail the emissions released during the flight and provide an everyday activity to which the consumer can relate the colossal scale of pollution released by flying.

The emissions figure for the flight should not be hidden in the Terms and Conditions (e.g. see T&C’s) but be openly displayed, or voiced, within the advertisement.

Competitions enticing the consumer to win a holiday overseas should also declare the emissions released from winning such a holiday so informing the consumer whether they wish to take part or not.

With aviation forecasting an increase in the demand for flying, flying promotions should provide the full facts to the consumer in all literature and advertisements, as we all face the urgency of a climate emergency.
