CANDIDATES! Don’t expect my vote if you support Gatwick expansion plans
ACTION NEEDED – We are asking you to display this poster (or your own) near your letterbox, to let candidates know that they will not get your vote if they support Gatwick’s G2 runway.
Six Reasons Why –
- Increased Aircraft Noise
- Increase in Emissions of Carbon, N0X and Vapours
- Decline in Air Quality due to Ultra Fine Particles
- Detrimental Effects on our Environment
- Congestion on our Roads and Rail
- Lack of Local Amenities
As responsible citizens, we are all working to reduce our personal carbon footprint, so “why should Gatwick Airport be allowed to continue to grow when it is a major polluter and contributor to climate change?” asks CAGNE.
We ask for your support in this, as opposing G2 will also reduce the aircraft noise that you would suffer with Gatwick expansion plans to add 34,000 extra flights to the pre-pandemic 285,000 a year.
We are being led to believe that the aviation sector should return to business-as-usual, due to unemployment figures and airlines being in financial trouble. But Gatwick admits that a new runway will not create new jobs and, prior to COVID, automation was already reducing jobs at the airport.
Little of what we can do to reduce our personal carbon footprint, in our homes and in our daily lives, will be enough to compensate for the continued growth of aviation.
Gatwick would add 618,000 extra tonnes of carbon a year (0.618MtCO2) to the 0.77MtCO2 in 2017 (predicted by AEF to reach 0.95MtCO2 in 2028 from the main runway alone [i]).
The owners of Gatwick Airport are pushing ahead with expansion plans to rebuild the emergency runway as G2, in addition to planned growth off the main runway. Yes, the emergency runway is there already, but to allow the two runways to operate in unison, it would have to be widened and effectively re-built.
Gatwick is looking to ask the Secretary of State for Transport for planning permission (a Development Consent Order) in early 2022, after conducting a public consultation in September 2021 and having had many meetings with local authorities (behind Zoom doors) to ascertain support for expansion.
Please display this poster near your letterbox and let candidates know that they will not get your vote if they support Gatwick G2.
Thank you.
